    Comments

Norval Morrisseau offered this gift to a bush pilot, who kept the piece in his private collection before selling it through Winchester Gallery, who represented Morrisseau works. It was purchased directly from the Winchester Gallery and remained in that Victoria, BC private collection until purchased by Matt Steffich at Steffich Fine Art.

The painting depicts two bull moose engaged in what seems to be a friendly standoff, in the classic Woodland Style that Norval Morrisseau made popular. This painting is not the typical vibrant colours that Norval Morrisseau used later in his career.

There are minor cosmetic issues, which add to the authenticity and history of the piece. Matt Steffich commissioned Robert Bateman’s assistant to carefully restore the delicate original custom frame, likely created by Morrisseau or his assistant at the time.

Gabrielle Jensen of Gulf Island Picture framing custom fit an exact matching black frame, to secure the historic piece together.

“Two Bull Moose” is certified as a true and authentic Norval Morrisseau painting by the late Matt Steffich, and now by the Steffich Fine Art Galleries, Inc. business.

July 2020 - “Two Bull Moose” is appraised at $35,000
